But it would also provide jobs for thousands of workers repairing America's highways. And many roads and bridges need repair as badly as our nation's unemployed need work.

Some 8,000 miles of the interstate-highway system have eroded dangerously, and 2,000 more miles need resurfacing every year, according to the Department of Transportation. Of the 3.9 million miles of local roads, almost two-thirds need to be resurfaced or rebuilt. And nearly of the nation's 557,516 bridges are obsolete or unsafe. Experts estimate that we will have to spend up to $3 trillion this decade just to keep public facilities at today's level of service. DO YOU KNOW Which President committed the U.S.

to building the interstate highway system? WEDNESDAY'S ANSWER On Jan. 23, 1971, it was minus 80 degrees (F.) in Prospect Creek, Alaska. 12-9-82 VEC. Inc. 1989 The Friday, Forecast December For 7 p.m.

Raquel to take pregnancy leave NEW YORK (AP) Raquel Welch is cutting short her run in Broadway's "Woman of the Year" to await a baby she expects in August. A spokesman for the show confirmed on Wednesday that Miss Welch will leave when her contract expires Jan. 2. She originally had planned to extend it to April 15, and with the show grossing better than $300,000 a week, Miss Welch's pregnancy will cost her about $508,000 in salary. Word that Miss Welch was expecting baby came first from Andre Weinfeld, her third husband.

The 42-year-old actress has two children, Damon, 22, and Tawnee, by her first marriage. Miss Welch replaced Lauren Bacall in the musical six months ago.
